hurricane sandy. officials are calling it one of the worst natural gas -- disasters in u.s. history. >> cleanup continues along the eastern seaboard. the shoreline is forever changed. >> good evening, donna. you see the boardwalk behind me as battered. areas like this are now struggling to come back. heavy equipment helps to steer the difficult recovery. power lines are going back up the many places are still overmatched by the devastation left behind. >> this is beyond what we imagined. >> the road to recovery is lined with hundreds of thousands struggling to survive. the lines stretch for blocks if you're lucky, but more often for miles.

also i am recovering from a quadruple open-heart bypass. i depend on electricity to do a lot of things. >> because the tree is historic, it cannot be cut down. >> right now i am concerned about getting killed and down. it is one road with 20 homes or less. it is just a pain in the bike. >> they could not understand why crews seem to leave the situation alone. >> the main thing for us is the wire. >> work crews cut to the branching out the power back on in the small pocket. the significance? >> there is nothing that prohibits us from doing what we need to do. for us, it is a matter of having the crews to move from one location to another, get in there and restore power.

>> at the height of the storm, 45,000 were without power. he says pge is dealing with making sure public safety came first and then dealing with communities with large sizes and then going to the smaller ones. this was one of the smaller ones that has gotten power. >> thank you very much. authorities are blaming one more death in maryland on super storm sandy. this one near oakland, maryland. an elderly man died while shoveling snow in a region that has been buried in snow. the other three deaths include fallen trees and a weather- related car crash. >> one factor that could make recovery more difficult, the potential for another storm. >> forecasters said there could be a nor'easter headed that way next week.

tom tasselmyer is in the center. what do you think? >> it is that time of the year. storms that -- tend to have a tendency to blow up and become nor'easters. remember the european model? this is a look at a. those circles, those lines of pressure, pinpointing the storm. 9:00 p.m. on wednesday. those are strong in north east winds. it will be warm enough for rain but that model is indicating a storm to the east. not as strong as sandy but definitely a nor'easter trying to develop. a few sprinkles here. it is breezy and chile. 30's in the mountains. below normal temperatures through the weekend. more on the forecast in a couple of minutes. >> at this hour, drivers are being told to avoid the york road. that is where crews continued to

repair a water main break. the 16 inch burst had nothing to do with superstar and sandy. just aging infrastructure. the road was evacuated for a showdown time. this road is back open following another break. crews had been working since 6:30 yesterday morning until traffic was finally back up and running up this afternoon. >> a community is mourning the loss of a young life tonight. a freshman died after he was found unresponsive on sunday. kim spoke to friends and classmates and she joins us in the studio with that story. >> lewis was a standout and was starting his high school career as a student any swimmer at the

>> we saw a little sunshine today. slow improvement starting to break out of this pattern. the storm is long gone but still influencing much of the nation with the flow around it and the weather disturbance. they generate a sprinkle here and there. once it passes through, the clouds to end at 10 that went -- is when we see sunshine. still cold enough for some snow. there are some showers in upstate new york. we are embedded in a cool weather pattern associated with sandy. temperatures will be below normal through the weekend. if we switched the cameras, we have winds coming off of lake erie generating rain and snow showers. notice the counterclockwise rotation because of the low pressure, way up to the north.

temperature is even in southern maryland, in the low 50's. the mountains, all that snow on the ground, they are having around freezing. after a spring: a few locations, skies will turn clear. temperatures will stay below normal into the first part of the weekend. with high pressure over the area, saturday looks to feature mainly clear skies. a lot of sunshine for tomorrow. 33 tonight. but it will feel colder because the west winds come in at 10-15 miles an hour and produce a bit of a wind chill. again, with the clocks going forward over the weekend, though sun sets are going to be an hour earlier each evening. tomorrow, northwest winds still gusting to 25 miles an hour. even with sunshine, temperatures

in the 50's. small craft advisory continues on the bay. 60 degree water temperature but dropping into the 50's over at the beach. the influence of sandy, east of the hudson bay, dominates the weather pattern. trying a more cold air. weather disturbances are going to be on the southern edge. we have one from the midwest which looks like it is aimed at the carolinas into sunday. we may see a little cloud cover on sunday. the next one is off to the north and west. that is the one that could actually strengthen or turn into a nor'easter on the coast wednesday or so. tomorrow, i enjoy the sunshine. watch out for the cloud cover that will be going down to our south. then we are back into the sunshine going into monday and we will have to wait and see if anything develops late on

news. the student accused of bringing two guns to a school is now facing charges. police are not releasing his name because they are juvenile charges and he is only 12 years old. they found a loaded bb gun in his backpack. he threatened to one other student. police and wisconsin are questioning a graduate after a bizarre incident that they seat temple where six were killed. detectives say he was seen visiting the camp with a back pack this week. he told police he wanted to pray for them following the august massacre. after searching, detectives found several boxes of ammunition and a notebook. inside were writings about the colorado moving theater shooting spree and a crime scene tape.

many new yorkers had been complaining it would be insensitive and divert city resources when many are suffering. no word on whether it has been rescheduled. right now, winds of 90 miles an hour and two feet of snow. it certainly created a punch of weather extremes. >> several days later there are more questions about the impact of global warming on our climate. we joined a teleconference with some ocean scientists to find out answers on this. he joins us with more. >> the four hundred year old tree which you see behind me that has been reduced to a stop is another victim of sandy. as you said, some scientists are speaking out about climate change in the role that the place with the super storms and how it chesapeake area will be affected.

the tree is one of the evidence markers left by super storm sandy. profs discussed with reporters concerns about future storms. >> unless we solve the climate crisis, we can be sure that a super hurricane fuelled by global warming will eventually strike coastal maryland and virginia. >> while he was convinced it was a major factor, he stopped short of using a global warming -- warming blanket. he says the ocean temperature is rising about 1 to 2 feet a century. warm air of the ocean is what fuels hurricanes and makes them stronger. >> the consensus is clearly, in

the sexual assault of a jogger this morning. at a briefing, officers say a woman in her 20's was on the run before work when a man attacked her. he is believed to have been wearing a mask. detectives say there are a lot of surveillance cameras and they are reviewing the footage for any possible leads. city police are investigating a shooting in west baltimore that happened around 8:30 last night. police found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the lower extremities. officials say he was shot elsewhere. >> and the presidential election, we are down to single digits. nine swing states and one of them is the grand prize. but the -- that is where they campaigned today. steve handelsman as the big

14 others were rescued by the coast guard. officials say the investigation will try to determine the cause of the accident and whether mechanical failure played a part. frustration is mounting tonight among the yorkers. people waiting in lines to fill up their gas containers. this is a shot from long island where gas is in short supply and people need it to power their generators. lines began forming as early as 6:00 a.m. and the fight is occasionally getting nasty. one driver was arrested after trying to cut in line and then pulled a gun. troopers have been deployed to keep the peace. >> anybody used a generator may have to throw theirs away. >> thousands of models from all test. which one and why is ahead. >> public schools have extended

>> nearly 1 million drivers will get money back after two car makers overstated their gas mileage. it does not reflect the actual mileage according to the environmental protection agency. it launched an audit after about a dozen complaints. it affects the elantra, accent, genesis, tuscon, and santa fe models nad the rio and the optima hybrid. they are from 20 11-2013. the automakers are apologizing for the air and executives say they will pay for the difference in gas mileage. window stickers will also be changed. hurricane sandy was a reminder of always taking inventory of what is in your home. it should be no surprise there is an application for that. there is actually three of them.

safe is something for your iphone and ipad that allows you to store and organize your sensitive data. you can keep insurance and other information there. there is a free application called know your stuff for apple and enter it devices. they are organized and information is stored on remote server so you can access it from any computer. home inventory as another helpful application. it will cost you $5. you do an inventory and you can document all of your possessions with photos and the value estimates. if you relied on a generator to get you through the storm, nearly 9000 are being recalled because they could pose a fire hazard. fuel cannot leak from the generators, which were sold at costco from december 20 11 through july of this year for about $700. eight fires have been reported.

you can click on their red important product recall notice for more information on a repair kit or a refund. the grocery chain has issued recalls involving pumpkin roles because it may contain pieces of plastic. they voluntarily recall that after getting complaints. officials say they were sold in whole and half packaging. customers can return them to their local store for a full refund. it is also recalling its organic spinach salad because it may be contaminated with the cold light. the recall covers five and 11 an ounce packages. back in business. the pennsylvania market is open once again complete with six months of renovations. along with this new book, new
